Recent research indicates a growing interest in Class 4 laser therapy, also known as high-intensity laser therapy, as a non-invasive and drug-free treatment for peripheral neuropathy. While more extensive, large-scale studies are often called for, current findings suggest promising outcomes in several key areas. Some of these indicated benefits include the following:
- Pain Reduction: Multiple studies and clinical observations indicate that Class 4 laser therapy can significantly reduce neuropathic pain. The laser light stimulates the release of endorphins, the body’s natural pain relievers, and helps modulate inflammatory mediators. Together, these factors help to decrease pain and swelling.
- Nerve Regeneration and Repair: Research suggests that laser therapy can promote regeneration of damaged peripheral nerves by enhancing mitochondrial function and increasing ATP (adenosine triphosphate) production, which is ultimately crucial for cellular repair and nerve function.
- Improved Circulation: Class 4 lasers can stimulate the dilation of blood vessels and the formation of new capillaries, leading to improved blood flow to affected nerves. Enhanced circulation delivers essential oxygen and nutrients, supporting nerve healing and potentially restoring sensation.
- Enhanced Tissue Repair and Healing: By increasing collagen production and promoting overall tissue repair, laser therapy can strengthen tissues surrounding nerves and improve the overall health of the nervous system.
The mechanism of action of laser therapy is believed to work through the concept of photobiomodulation, where light energy is emitted and then absorbed by different cells in the body triggering beneficial biological reactions. These reactions include increased ATP production for cellular energy, reduction of oxidative stress, stimulation of cellular proliferation, release of nitric oxide which improves blood flow, and the modulation of the immune system and the reduction of inflammation.
When considering Class 4 laser therapy for different conditions, including peripheral neuropathy, there are other factors to take into consideration as well. Class 4 laser therapy should not be used as a universal solution. It may not be suitable for all individuals, especially those with active cancers or those that have infections in the specific treatment areas. Class 4 laser therapy should also be viewed as a complementary therapy modality that can be used in a more comprehensive treatment paln which may include other therapies such as lifestyle modifications and nutritional support, as well as part of a co-management strategy with other specialists and providers.
Since the summer of 2023, Quint Chiropractic has incorporated the use of the Horizon Class 4 Laser from Summus Medical Laser. We have treated several different conditions and have had great success with significantly reducing both pain and symptomatology in these patients. Examples of some of the conditions treated include not only peripheral neuropathy, but also tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, sprain/strain injuries, migraines, headaches, TMJ discomfort and several others. To find out more about this pain-free, non-invasive treatment modality with minimal to no side effects, as well as to find out if it would be a treatment option for you, please contact our office today at (910) 392-8896. We look forward to the opportunity to help you soon!
