Functional Movement Screen (FMS)

Your journey into movement begins here.  Movement is the universal language of human expression.  Understanding the how and why of moving well helps us aspire to move often.  Welcome to the Movement Experience.

The FMS uses objective and validated standards to check the movement baseline and build foundations for lifelong movement success.  Therefore, certified professionals can discover the best opportunities to improve movement and identify how to train with purpose and precision in order for individuals to achieve their fitness, sports performance or return from injury goals.

The FMS is the screening tool used to identify limitations of asymmetries.  It measures seven fundamental movement patterns that are key to functional movement quality in individuals with no current pain or known musculoskeletal injury.

Using FMS scoring results, movement principles are then put into action to make programming decisions and guide purpose-driven exercise selection.  The FMS is that ongoing feedback took that makes the entire training process -- both short-term and long-term -- both effective and efficient.

The Functional Movement Screen dives into the importance and science of movement.  The results of the actual screen itself will allow a better idea of how well each individual allows for proper mobility and stability through various position and motions that we use on an every day basis.  The principle is simple:  Are you moving well?  And are you moving often?

From the Functional Movement Screen itself, it will allow for the ability to:

  • Recognize movement patterns that support work, sports and daily activities.
  • Understand the true relationship that movement patterns play in our health and fitness goals.
  • Identify principles to support the importance of the movement screen itself.
  • Explain the role of mobility, motor control and functional patterns in our fundamental movements.
  • Demonstrate the use of the Functional Movement Screen principles, theories, process and procedures.

The principles of of movement are implemented from the results that are derived from the Functional Movement Screen.  This allows to make the proper programming decisions with more precision, accuracy and purpose.  The results of the screen provide valuable feedback throughout the training process to ensure that we are meeting short-term and long-term movement goals for lifelong health and vitality.

Functional Movement Screen Level 1 Certified

Dr. Harris is a Chiropractic Sports Physician attained Level 1 Certification with the Functional Movement Screen in June 2018.  Under the guidance and tutelage of Dr. Lee Burton and Gray Gook, two of the co-founders of the Functional Movement System, Dr. Harris is now among a select group of healthcare providers that takes a closer look into the value of maintaining proper human movement and applying, or re-establishing optimal movement patters back into the normal daily motions of every patient.

Functional Movement Screen Level 2 Certified

In December 2018, Dr. Harris attained Level 2 Certification with the Functional Movement Screen under guidance from Brett Jones, one of the Master and Lead Kettlebell instructors from StrongFirst, as well as one of the lead instructors within the FMS corrective courses.  The second level of the FMS screen dives further into corrective patterns and exercises that can better retrain various motor dysfunctions and movement patterns identified via the initial Functional Movement Screen itself.

The Functional Movement Screen can play a pivotal and vital role in pinpointing restrictions and limitations that preclude patients from maintaining proper and optimal movement patters.  These sub-optimal movement patterns and subsequent movement compensations could potential predispose individuals to slower recovery, and potential future injuries as well.

At Quint Chiropractic, the Functional Movement Screen can be offered as an individual 1-on-1 screening tool for patients in the office, as well as a tool used at any fitness facility to determine who is moving well, and who isn't.  Whether you are in a public fitness facility, private gym or CrossFit facility, the Functional Movement Screen can help you improve your performance and efficiency, whether you're at the level of weekend warrior or professional athlete alike!
